With miles and miles of shoreline, the beach seems like an obvious place to start when it comes to talking about family fun in Door County! The beaches are perfect for picnics, swimming, building sandcastles, paddle boarding and running through the surf! Lucky for us, many of our family vacation rentals have been on the waterfront. Fun was just steps out the back door.

No matter where you are staying, Door County has plenty of beaches to explore. Some beaches, like Waterfront Park in Sister Bay, Egg Harbor Beach, and Nicolet Bay Beach in Peninsula State Park, are bustling with activity.

Others, such as the ones at Newport State Park or on Washington Island, offer a more peaceful beach experience. We love the smooth limestone rocks of Schoolhouse Beach. Signs say you can’t take the rocks home with you.. but we hope it’s okay to toss them back into the water!

Hitting the greens with your mini golfers

Wherever we go, we putt-putt. Mini golf is one of those easy activities for the whole family. The courses are usually colorful, or silly, or just plain fun. The kids love it when they beat their father on a hole! In Door County, you’ll find a few to choose from. Pirate’s Cove in Sister Bay is a family favorite. This year, we have The Red Putter in Ephraim and Evergreen in Fish Creek on our list!

A spot for budding artists and crafty kids of all ages

Be an artist for a day at Hands on Art Studio in Fish Creek. This DIY Door County destination offers all types of projects, from jewelry and ceramics to mosaics and fused glass. Years later and we still have this work of art up on the wall. Never taking it down!

And there’s more! There are several studio spaces to explore. And you can paint on just about anything: canvas, wood, glass or metal. Guess which artist needed a little bit of dad’s help to finish?

Just make sure you plan ahead and maybe don’t go on the last day of your vacation. Depending on which project you choose, you may have to return the next day to pick it up.

Food and fun rolled into one family outing

Meet us in the center of the peninsula for this next idea for family fun in Door County!

PC Junction

We may have too many pictures of this next fun option for kids. That’s because we are always bringing family and friends to PC Junction to check it out. What’s not to love when your food is delivered to you by train?! You may have to wait for a prime seat at the bar, but it’s worth the fun the kids will have when the train goes by right in front of them. If it’s not bringing food, sometimes it brings a bubble machine!

As for that long wait. Don’t sweat it. The kids will have plenty of fun exploring the grounds on pedal cars, while the grownups sip cocktails from the outdoor bar. You’ll also find pizza and ice cream here!

As the sun sets, take a step back in time

Summer doesn’t feel complete without at least one trip to the Skyway Drive-In Theatre in Fish Creek.

Old-fashioned fun that you don’t find everywhere, the outdoor movie theater is an experience! Be sure to pack some blankets, lawn chairs and bug spray in order to take in the double feature in comfort. Bring your own snacks, or grab some nostalgic favorites at the snack bar. Last year it was too cold to sit outside but we had fun watching and listening to the new Top Gun blasting on the car radio!

Family fun on the farm

Not just any farm. This is The Farm. Located on the northern end of Sturgeon Bay, the farm describes itself as a living museum of rural America. What your kids will remember is that they get to bottle feed baby goats, lambs and pigs. It’s quite the frenzy but it is also the cutest!

Our kids spent the rest of the time looking for cats, holding cats and wanting the cats to come home with us. But there is a lot to see and do. They can milk a goat, possibly see chicks hatch and learn about life on the farm. We explored some nature trails all while looking for the next kitty.

We’ve written about other options for family fun in Door County in previous blog posts. We take our kids on hikes, go out for ice cream and enjoy the many outdoor dining options. Check out Stabbur Beer Garden and Peach Barn Brewery, which are both family friendly. We’ve picked cherries and climbed observation towers. Our kids loved exploring Cave Point County Park. And this year we might even go on a kayak tour to explore the geologic wonders.

Our friends at Destination Door County have even more ideas to keep your kids busy and entertained on your family vacation. And as always, if you’re looking for a fantastic property to begin making those lasting memories, check us out at Northern Door Vacations.
